Nightmare:
Horror Planters for the Terminally Devoted
Chapter two
Where Nightmares Take Root. Horror Face and Midnight Movie Planters come to Life
There is a room in every house that the candle never quite reaches. You've walked past it a hundred times without noticing — that's the trick of it. Nothing here announces itself. It waits, the way all slow-burn slashers wait, for the exact moment you've stopped paying attention. And then, just as you pass, something on the shelf catches your eye. A horror planter, half-lit, cast in the kind of grin usually reserved for midnight movie villains. By daylight, everything in this chapter is easy to dismiss — a curiosity, a conversation piece, cult horror decor that's interesting to look at and better left alone. But you don't leave it alone, do you? You bring it home anyway. You give it a place where you can keep an eye on it, which is precisely the arrangement it wanted all along. It's patient during the day. It lets you forget. And then the sun goes down. That's when the Nightmare Collection wakes up — a slow, sourceless glow catching in eyes that shouldn't hold light at all, shadows pooling where shadows have no business pooling. You'll tell yourself it's just paint, just pigment doing what pigment does in the dark. But some nights you'll catch it watching, and some small, ancient part of you — the final girl in all of us — will remember every secret you've ever kept in a dark room, and wonder how much of that it's already learned. Nothing here asks for much. A little water, a little green growing in the shadow of a grin, a witness willing to leave the lights off just a moment longer than feels comfortable. In exchange, it offers what every good slasher offers: the sense that you are not, in fact, alone in the room — and that whatever's watching has been waiting a very long time for the company. Some collections you display. This one displays you right back, glowing, from across a dark room, long after you've gone to bed.
Each chapter holds a collection. Each collection, a secret.
